Brother's First Birthday

The whole story of August's birthday party is here and here. Oh yeah, also here.  But these are some favorite Madelyn Moments from his special day.

Madelyn wanted to create her own party decoration. She came up with the idea and created the entire thing on her own. I think it's awesome and we put it on one of the picnic tables for the party.

She's been a big sister for a whole year! And such a good one!
A very good protector - keeping August from grabbing the candle (like she did on her first birthday!)

Look how much she is enjoying watching him.

One of my favorite photos from the whole day!

This lovely young lady is Sydney, the 13-year-old daughter of my good friend Amy, who used to work with me at Curves. Sydney and Madelyn have formed a very special bond, and it's a joy to see them together.

Sydney braided Madelyn's hair and it looked so pretty! This was a turning point for her, now she sometimes allows us to pull her hair back into a ponytail!

They were practically inseparable during the party.

What a lovely young lady!

School of Magick

Second camp of the summer was "School of Magick" through Portland Trackers Earth. This seemed like a really neat concept where the kids explore nature through the context of wizardry and magic.  Part of the reason we chose this camp is because it was a good location to meet Madelyn's best cousin Jack, so they did the camp together!

I believe Madelyn mostly enjoyed this, but she actually got a little scared one day when they spotted "The Empty One" in the trees, dressed all in black and a white mask. I tried to help Madelyn understand that everything was for fun and pretend, but she is convinced that this kind of magic is real. Oh boy.  She did overcome that fear and understood that The Empty One is actually good, she is only pretending to be bad to help them practice casting spells. Okay then.

Each day the kids found a special object they needed to defeat The Empty One and help her turn good again.  These objects included a jar of sylph breath, a dragon's tooth, and a water sprite's necklace. So that gives you an idea of what this camp was all about!

Creative Camping Set

It's one of my favorite things to see Madelyn create.  This Calico Critters camping set was one of her big Christmas gifts last year.  This day she made grass and standing trees out of paper and feathers, plus a campfire out of torn tissues, leaves, and sticks. I believe Madelyn has more fun creating her settings than playing make-believe stories so far.

Big Fourth of July Day

Our day began with a red, white, and blue breakfast!

Then we participated in the neighborhood parade, and this time we weren't dragging dead last like last year when I was about to have that baby!

Everywhere we bring Loki and Kezia, they get a lot of attention from kids and adults alike.

Ready to go!

After the parade, Gary and Madelyn read the Declaration of Independence together and discussed what it means to live in a free country.

Next on our agenda of Independence Day Fun: Oaks Park!

Gary and I haven't been there is ages, and it was Madelyn's first time.

Of course she had a lot of fun.

Except neither of us enjoyed the Octopus ride, we both got motion sick. :( I've enjoyed this ride before, so I guess I must be getting old! We spent the whole time staring at our feet and trying not to lose our cookies.

Hi!

Lastly, we decided to skip viewing a big fireworks display so the kids could get to sleep earlier (especially August). Instead, we picked up a small package of street fireworks on the way home and after putting baby in bed enjoyed these in our driveway.  This was actually Madelyn's first time lighting our own fireworks and she was absolutely delighted. So that made it really fun!

Summer Tubing Hill

When we did these tubes last summer, I was WAY too pregnant to haul my large self and a heavy tube up this giant hill. :(

But I got to try it this year, and...it was sort of fun.

Woo-hoo! It was very hot, so we only went down a few times.

Sunriver Biking

Madelyn is an excellent bike rider now, which made it SO fun to bike around Sunriver. The house we rented this time was really far from the Village, SHARC, etc., so we did a lot of long rides and Madelyn did fantastic.

August loved riding too!

Mom and Dad's Race

My awesome brother Bryan watched all the kids while the other 3 adults ran the 10k in Sunriver.

Here's our little family at the finish line after Daddy's very first running race! He did so awesome.

Pacific Crest Splash Pedal n Dash

My Christmas gift from Gary was a trip to Sunriver this summer for us BOTH to run the 10k at the Pacific Crest Sports Festival. My brother's family came too and we had a great time!

We registered Madelyn for the Kids' Splash Pedal-n-Dash race.  We pulled into Sunriver just barely in time - or so we thought! I had done a very poor job of preparing obviously, because I discovered on our way to drop our stuff off at the house that the race started 30 minutes earlier than I had thought, and I just assumed we'd be able to check in at the starting area, but the check-in was all completed several hours beforehand at another location. OOPS! When we arrived at the starting area I felt some relief that Madelyn's age group was still maybe 15 minutes or more from starting, so at least she didn't miss it. But we had to awkwardly get her bike through crowds to the transition area and, at the advice from one of the volunteers, just had her get in line without her race bib. Thankfully no one kicked her off the course.

Ready to get in line to start her first "triathalon!"

And she's off!

This is the "splash" part - no real swimming.

Next the bike ride - Madelyn is now an expert rider!

And here's where we met another snag - we didn't have a clear plan of action for following or meeting Madelyn at the finish.  Gary and I had to walk pretty far back to the parking lot where I hopped on my bike to try and follow Madelyn, and he and August drove to the Village where the kids would finish. But I was so far behind Madelyn, plus had to move pretty slowly around kids racing, and then made the mistake stopping to try and find Madelyn's bike at the next transition to be sure she'd already come through - I began to fear that Madelyn would reach the finish line with no one to greet her.

And that is exactly what happened. When I finally reached the Village I dumped my bike against a tree and frantically searched the throngs of people for my little girl! The finish line volunteers couldn't remember if a girl had come through without a race number, but I knew she had beat me. I was not yet concerned that Madelyn was in real danger; I was confident that I would find her, but my heart was breaking knowing that she might be afraid, and also that I was not there to cheer her across the finish line!  After several minutes I finally spotted her wandering and searching the crowd for a familiar face. I ran to her, and she was not crying until I hugged her tight and apologized for not being there sooner. I couldn't help my tears then either.

Madelyn got a very nice medal, and we sheepishly found the kids' race registration table and received her T-shirt and race packet from the confused volunteers. Great work, Madelyn!

Art Camp

Madelyn's first camp of the summer was Art Camp, and she had an amazing time. One of the major projects they worked on all week was this house.. Starting with a plain wooden box, Madelyn used all kinds of recycled materials and art supplies to create furniture, appliances, a treasure chest full of jewels, window treatments, a garden...it is pretty awesome!

Father's Day

We started the day creating a chalk mural for Daddy.

August even made his mark...and also ate some chalk.

Madelyn made some very creative artwork.

Including copying my "#1 DAD" with her own idea: "#2 DaD" which I think means he is so awesome that he takes BOTH 1st and 2nd place!

Next we went to the beach and it was such a gorgeous day on the Oregon coast!

Dad and Madelyn made a great castle and village.

Madelyn loves collecting treasures on the beach.

And she made another village!
